Jack Stern, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Stern is the proud founder of Brain & Spine Surgeons of New York and its president until 2015.

He and Dr. Neubardt were the first to promote the concept of spinal surgery being performed by an orthopedic/neurosurgical team. He was a pioneer in the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring to promote and enhance patient safety during neurosurgery. Dr. Stern now confines his practice to spinal surgery including spinal tumors, spinal reconstructions, degenerative disc disease, and herniated discs. He uses conventional as well as minimally invasive approaches.

In 2015, his book, “Ending Back Pain”, was published by Penguin Press and remains an Amazon best seller. Dr. Stern is a frequent lecturer both locally and internationally.

Dr. Stern is deeply committed to community service. He is a monthly sleepover volunteer at the Homeless Shelter of the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, New York City. He has been on the board of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, President of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Board of Governors, Head of the Photography Acquisitions Committee of the Jewish Museum of New York, and presently on the Executive Board of the Congregation of B’nai Jeshurun in New York City; a community dedicated to social justice.

Dr. Stern and his wife, Judy, have four children and were recently blessed with their first grandchild.

Dr. Stern received both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his internship in General Surgery at NYU Medical Center – Bellevue and completed his residency in neurological surgery at the Neurological Institute of Columbia University Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Stern is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is an associate professor at New York Medical College. He has previously been on the faculties of Tufts University School of Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, and the Cornell School of Medicine.
