Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s Syndrome is an abnormality of the central nervous system that produces involuntary and repetitive motor and vocal tics.  Many tics may be controlled by medication. However, in the case of severe disabling tics that cannot be contained via medication, the patient may benefit from deep brain stimulation (DBS)surgical treatment. Commonly used to treat epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease, DBS has been used to successfully relieve Tourette’s symptoms. DBS surgical treatment of Tourette’s is offered by a limited number of neurosurgeons, including Brain & Spine Surgeons of New York.
